Educational Guidelines

As a reminder, all Medical Radiographers, Limited Radiographers, and Provisional
Limited Radiographers, practicing in Nebraska, must document at least twenty-four
(24) hours of continuing education, related to Medical Radiography, every two (2)
years. Part 16.09, of the State of Nebraska Regulations for Control of Radiation-Ionizing,
describes continuing education requirements for persons Performing Medical Radiography.
The State may audit any renewal application, to determine if compliance of continuing
education requirements are being met by the individual. Those selected for audit
shall be required to produce documentation of his or her attendance at those continuing
education activities listed on the renewal application. Therefore, documentation
of continuing education is essential. At a minimum, the documentation necessary
for acceptance by the State must include:
- The Topic of the Program
- The Name of the Provider
- The Location of the Continuing Education
- The Date(s) of the Program
- The Number of Hours Received for the Program
The person must attend the complete continuing education course in order to get
credit for it. Partial credit will not be provided. One hour (fifty to sixty minutes)
of attendance equals one (1.0) hour of credit. The program must be of at least one
(1.0) hour of credit to be accepted by the State of Nebraska. The topic and/or objectives
must be related to Medical Radiography, which may include, but is not limited to:
Mammography, MRI, Computed Tomography, Cardiovascular Technology, Quality Management,
Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Ultrasound, Medical Dosimetry and Bone Densitometry.
The State of Nebraska will accept as continuing education, the following:
- Programs which meet the quality standards established by nationally recognized organizations
or associations of radiography. (e.g. ASRT)
- Passing an advanced level examination in Mammography, MRI, Computed Tomography,
Cardiovascular Technology, Quality Management, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy,
Ultrasound and Medical Dosimetry during the biennial renewal period, will satisfy
the twenty-four (24) hour continuing education requirement. This does not include
the Limited Operator exam sponsored by the State.
- Learning experiences, provided they are planned and conducted for individuals performing
Medical Radiography, which are related to the practice of Medical Radiography.
- Academic courses in an accredited post-secondary institution, which are related
to the specific knowledge and/or technical skills required for the practice of Medical
Radiography.
- Course, lectures or offerings related to the technical and scientific knowledge
for the practice of Medical Radiography, which include, but are not limited to:
- Radiation Protection
- Equipment maintenance
- Image production and evaluation
- Patient care and management
- Quality assurance activities
- A course in CPR, which results in certification by the American Heart Association
or the American Red Cross. The certification shall be valid at the time of renewal.
Only three (3) credit hours for CPR will be counted during the biennial renewal
period.
- Home studies that have been assigned a specific number of continuing education credit
hours by the home study provider.
- Continuing education obtained to meet continuing education requirements for a health
care profession other than Medical Radiography. There must be a rational connection
to the practice of Medical Radiography. No more than four (4) credit hours for this
type of continuing education may be counted within each year of the biennial renewal
period.
