RT in DC Report

April 21, 2009
|
Connie Mitchell and James Temme represented the NSRT by attending the 11th annual
R.T. in D.C. advocacy event held in Washington D.C. April 21, 2009. The event was
attended by approximately 150 Radiologic Technologists from across the United States.
All participants were given a series of presentations on Monday, April 20th in preparation
of visits to the “Hill” the next day. Presentations by ASRT staff and lobbyists
included; 1) an update on current medical imaging issues, 2) The importance of Affiliates
and Advocacy, 3) History of the CARE bill and the R.T. in D.C. Advocacy event. Technologists
were given the opportunity to role play as lobbyists.
|
On Tuesday, April 21, all participants went up to the capital to visit with their
individual congressional house and senate representatives. The main purpose was
to seek support and sponsorship for the 2009 CARE (Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility
and Excellence in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy) Bill.
|
Temme and Mitchell visited the legislative assistants in the offices of the three
Nebraska congressmen; Fortenberry, Smith and Terry and the two Senators; Johanns
and Nelson. Congressman Terry and Senator Johann’s office indicated that they may
co-sponsor the bill (Terry co-sponsored the Bill last year). No real commitment
from the other offices was made.
|
A brief report was given by all who “lobbied” that day. Over all the ASRT staff,
lobbyists and Technologists that participated in this event were optimistic and
indicated that this may be the year (or next) that the CARE bill will become law.
If the Bill does come up for a vote via committee or on the floor, NSRT members
will be encouraged to contact their Senators and individual Congressman and ask
for their support (and vote aye).
|
NSRT members who have questions in regard to the status of the 2009 CARE bill may
contact the NSRT Legislative committee, Connie Mitchell or James Temme.
